What Are Crowns and Bridges?

A crown is a cap that fits onto the top surface of a broken or damaged tooth. They are commonly used to fix a tooth that has been partially broken, to protect a weak tooth, or cover a tooth implant or root canal. Ideally, a crown is only used to treat tooth conditions that we are unable to repair with other methods.

A bridge, or fixed partial denture, is a replacement for a missing tooth. We will have an artificial tooth made up to fit into the gap in your jaw and anchor it to crowns placed on the teeth either side. If a bridge isn’t fitted into a gap in your teeth, then the teeth either side could shift, resulting in your jaw becoming imbalanced.

How Long Do Crowns and Bridges Last?

Crowns and bridges are not a permanent treatment, though it is common for them to last for at least ten years and often more. Sometimes they do loosen and fall out, requiring replacement sooner than otherwise intended.
You can ensure the longevity of your crowns and bridges by regularly practicing excellent oral hygiene. Brush twice and floss once daily to maintain optimum tooth and gum health. And be sure to keep up regular visits to the dentist.

What Can I Expect When I Have a Crown or Bridge Placed?

When you visit us at Smile For Life for crowns and bridges our dentist will first thoroughly examine your mouth and discuss your options with you. Depending on your situation we may recommend a specific brand for your treatment.
An impression of the damaged tooth or missing tooth will be made. This will be used by a dental technician to create your crown or bridge an exact fit. We will look closely at the color of your teeth so that we can make your repair look as natural as possible. A temporary crown or bridge will be applied in the meantime.
When the permanent crown or bridge is ready, you will come back to us to have it securely fitted. You will now have a restored smile and be able to comfortably use your new teeth without the worry of pain.
